Sericulture
The district is predominantly agrarian. It has 6 Taluks with 1321 inhabited villages. The district known for silk and milk. In the District, extension wing is headed by The Deputy Director of Sericulture, Zilla Panchayath, Chikkaballapur and is assisted by 5 Assistant Directors at Taluk level. 14 Technical service centers at the Hobli level. Department has good market system comprising of one(01) class I(one) market at Sidlaghatta. Three(03) class II markets at Chintamani, H. Cross and Chikkaballapura. To cater to the needs of the Sericulture farmers there are Five(5) Government Grainages at Chadalapur, Chintamani, Gowribidanur, Sidlaghatta, Thalagawara and 65 Private licensed seed preparers. There are 3354 reeler families of which 30 are engaged in multiend units. Area under mulberry in district is 13358.53hectares in 1131villages covering 15570 familes of which 1159-SC, 1276-ST, 219-Minorities. Annualy 145.55 lakh disease free silkworm laying are brushed to produce 9425 M.Tonnes of silkworm cocoons and silk of 1346M.tones with average yield 71 kg per 100 disease free layings and generates Rs.282 crores income for the Sericulturists.

Schemes
To facilitate production of targeted quality silk and achieve the object of the silk project, Govt. propose to strengthen the support extended to the farmers. 1.Assistance to farmers for plantation of improved varieties of mulberry. 2.Assistance to farmers for procurement of rearing equipment . 3.Assistance for drip irrigation. 4.Assistance to farmers for procurement of quality disinfectants. 5.Assistance for construction of rearing houses Beneficiaries are, Interested Sericulture farmers who are having irrigated land focusing on Poor and marginal farmers mainly women in rural areas.Dept. Prescribed forms available at all Sericulture Extension Officers.
